Immediate BAC measurement using an approved evidential breath testing device.

Breath alcohol testing provides on-site results using an NHTSA-approved EBT device. Testing follows DOT procedures under 49 CFR Part 40 and can be performed alongside a drug test collection in the same appointment.

What is Breath Alcohol Testing?

Breath alcohol testing measures blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through a breath sample collected using an evidential breath testing (EBT) device. Under DOT regulations, a result at or above 0.04 BAC is a violation. A result between 0.02 and 0.039 BAC triggers a temporary removal from safety-sensitive duties. Non-DOT thresholds are set by the employer's policy.

Testing Process

01
Screening Test An initial screening breath sample is collected using the EBT device. If the result is below 0.02 BAC, the test is complete with a negative result.
02
Confirmation Test (if required) If the screening result is 0.02 or greater, a confirmation test is performed at least 15 minutes later using the same EBT device to verify the result.
03
Result Documentation Both results are recorded on the alcohol testing form (ATF). The form is signed by both the Breath Alcohol Technician and the employee before a copy is provided to the employer.
