What is DOT Drug Testing?

The Department of Transportation mandates drug and alcohol testing for employees in safety-sensitive positions to protect public safety. Tests must follow the procedures outlined in 49 CFR Part 40, which governs everything from collection to laboratory analysis and result reporting.

Collection Process

01
Donor Identification Photo ID is verified and the federal custody and control form (CCF) is initiated before collection begins.
02
Specimen Collection Urine is collected under direct or observed procedures as required. Temperature is checked and the specimen is sealed in the donor's presence.
03
Chain of Custody Transfer The sealed specimen and completed CCF are packaged and shipped to a SAMHSA-certified laboratory for analysis.
04
MRO Review and Reporting A Medical Review Officer reviews all laboratory results. Non-negative results are followed up with the donor before a final determination is issued to the employer.
